Melanie Batte, Columbia Basin Secondary School lead tutor, driven employee, and great friend, has worked with the school's GEAR UP program for going on four years now. (This is her first year as lead tutor. Hooray!) She spends her time with middle school students as well as high schoolers in an even 50/50 split. During the after school tutoring program, she remains mostly in the high school classrooms, filling in with the middle school when needed. When asked what was the most rewarding thing about working as a tutor here at the school, she said, "Working with kids. The kids are everything." Interacting with the students is what Batte enjoys the most. "I love seeing them succeed!”, she says with enthusiasm. Batte's strength is in math, in classes ranging from Geometry to Algebra. She explains, "It's such a good experience to 'watch the light turn on' when a student understands how to complete a problem". Aside from making connections with the students, she keeps up with all kinds of office work obligations. Organizing and planning the college cohort events has been one of the many responsibilities she has been working on lately. "We have already had two good cohorts,' she says, "and we are ready for the last two." There will be a couple more cohorts in the spring which will be voluntary events. Possible destinations may be the University of Washington, the Art Institute, and perhaps a technical college. GEAR UP asked Melanie if she would offer a word of advice for the rest of the WSU staff, tutors, and teachers. She said, "GEAR UP dreams are always achievable. Dream big. Always reach for the goal." |

Students from Moses Lake HS had a busy week. On Wednesday Nov. 7, a group visited the University of Washington. We had a great visit and the students were lucky enough to go inside the HEC Edmundson Pavilion and Husky Stadium. We followed that trip up on Saturday, Nov. 10 with a visit to Washington State University. Students enjoyed a campus tour, financial aid presentation, student panel and the opportunity to watch the Cougar football team beat Stanford! It was a great week for the MLHS GEAR UP. |

With the introduction of the GEAR UP program at the Glenwood School, students in this year’s seventh and eighth grades have great new opportunities. GEAR UP will sponsor a number of student services including college visits, new materials about the admissions process, mentoring, college planning activities, and lunchtime and after school tutoring. The after school tutoring program is in cooperation with the Glenwood School’s Homework Assistance starting at 2:45 each day. This service is provided Monday – Thursday each week. Students in all grades can check in to the program for help with their homework. When homework is finished, students have other academic activities to enhance learning like math manipulatives; educational computer games in math, science, and language arts; analytical thinking activities; and others. All students are required to work on academics until 3:30. At that time all students receive a snack. Following snack, GEAR UP students have the option to continue working on homework assignments if needed or attend a GEAR UP activity such as the Cooking Club, Scrapbook Club, and LEGO robotics. |

CBSS held their first cohort event for the 2007-08 school year on Friday, October 5th. Fifty 7th and 8th grade students loaded up into two roomy charter buses and took off for Pullman, Washington. Upon arrival, they met the WSU coordinator and began the campus tour with a first stop at the dining hall. The adventure of tracking down their meals was assisted by the entire GEAR UP Staff, middle school teacher, Mr. Erickson, and one parent chaperone. Through the maze of WSU students, the checkout line, and finally, to the seating area, and with only 15 minutes remaining to eat, lunch was greatly appreciated. Then, the 8th grade class set off in one direction, while the 7th graders headed off in another. Both groups were eventually able to rejoin throughout the day while enjoying the several interesting, hour-long demonstrations, including physics, entomology, as well as a very interesting session on birds of prey. CBSS'rs were especially attentive and, with behavioral problems at a minimum, the whole cohort experience was a memorable success! |
