GEAR UP students from Warden HS, Moses Lake HS, and Soap Lake HS, had the opportunity to spend five days in our nation's capital - Washington, DC. GEAR UP students that met requirements set by their local GEAR UP program and Close Up received a Scholarship that covered transportation, airfare, hotel, meals, and registration fees for Close Up's Intensive Washington D.C. five-day program.
Close Up is a hands on program that educates and inspires students to become civically engaged in their community and country. During the program, the students were able to meet other students from around the country and discuss hot topics being decided upon by our nation's leaders. Workshops were held at many of the capital's great monuments and buildings. Students also had the opportunity to meet with Washington State Senator Patty Murray to address any questions. Students felt that the trip was very rewarding and opened thier eyes to the actual power of the people. |

WSU, CWU, & UW GEAR UP had their Annual 8th Grade Career Showcase on May 24, 2007 at WSU Tri-Cities. 13 GEAR UP schools participated by sending their top 8th Grade Career Presenter. Students prepared a Career Board and/or a Career Powerpoint along with a 5-minute presentation that showcased a career of their choice.
After a very impressive performance from all the students, judges selected Warden Middle School’s Maritza Lino as the top presenter. Maritza’s poise and well prepared presentation on becoming a Pediatrician earned her a new Dell Computer. Congratulations Maritza! |

Students from WSU, CWU, and UW GEAR UP presented at the annual 8th Grade Career Showcase at WSU Tri-Cities. 13 students from around the region were selected by staff and/or peers to present their career boards. Each student came having already taken first place within their school so they are all winners!
Following a fabulous dinner and a warm welcome from GEAR UP Administration each student shared a 5 minute oral presentation on their career. The presentations were accompanied by elaborate career boards and/or power point, as well as various props and attire fitting to that career. The students presented before a judging panel as well as family and friends. Whitney Sell represented Chief Moses Middle School and did a fabulous job presenting her career choice of Crime Scene Investigator. All of the students came prepared and obviously put a tremendous amount of effort into researching and creating their projects. The evening closed with certificates and prizes being awarded to all. ~Congratulations to Whitney and to each and every student! |
