The Chief Moses GEAR UP Robotics Team has been hard at work for the past two months. They have built and programmed their own robot to accomplish various missions. They even did an energy audit on Chief Moses Middle School to determine where we could use alternative energy within the building. After the team perfected their robot and presented their findings to our principal Mr. Johnson, they were ready for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Regional Competition at Big Bend Community College. After a long but rewarding competition, the team came away with the Robot Design Award! This was one of five awards that allowed teams to advance to the state competition in Bellevue! The following week was full of long practices to get the team ready for the robot design interview, presentation interview, and robot mission competitions. On December 8th we traveled to Bellevue to compete among 33 other teams, including one team via web-cam from Kabul, Afghanistan! CMMS’ rookie team had a great showing against some tough veteran teams, but most importantly they had a wonderful time learning about science and technology! Great job Chief Moses GEAR UP Robotics Team! We are proud of you! |

Good Work Lego Team! December 1, 2007, Big Bend Community College hosted the regional competition for Columbia Basin Secondary Lego Team. Although “The Phoenixes” did not continue on to the state tournament, they competed well and put their heart and soul into the competition. Team leaders, Amanda Harris and Chris McMurtry (who have been a part of Lego Team ever since its beginnings) assisted The Phoenixes into receiving the Judge’s Award. Judges wanted to recognize the team that hadn’t necessary overcome challenges in a specific area, but all areas overall. Their team trophy currently sits in the CBSS glass trophy case located in the commons area. Feel free to take a look at it whenever you can! |

My name is Chelsea Yockey. GEAR UP has helped me tremendously in history. Within a few weeks, my grades were back to normal. Now I have a B in history. The thing I appreciate most is the one-on-one time, plus they made sure I understood it. And if I didn’t understand it, they made sure I did. Also, we would do different things to help understand the things I have problems with. Thank you for GEAR UP! Sincerely, Chelsea Yockey (Columbia Basin Secondary School Student) |

Warden GEAR UP is so fortunate to have Ms. Liz Mason on board! She has been invaluable to our program for years. Liz and our students have great love and respect for each other. Liz hales from Ocean Shores, Washington. She has been living in the Moses Lake area for 6 years. Warden High and Middle Schools have benefited from her efforts to improve our GEAR UP student’s academic performance since spring of 2003. Liz really brightens up the day with her enthusiasm and love for people! She loves bright colors, is very creative with posters & flyers and makes great bulletin boards too! Liz is also a very good flourishing photographer, loves to “do” crafts and listen to music. Besides being very good at “right brained activities” and is a serious “people person”, she also performs “left brain tasks” like data entry. She is a very versatile asset to our team. Besides her duties as a GEAR UP Tutor, she is also the Pep Club Advisor for our high school. She is loved by students, teachers and co-workers alike. “She knows everything about everything, so if you need to know, just ask Liz. She is a very caring person.” Teachers often report that she has “turned their students around" in their classes. Thank you Liz! |
